Posted: 20 Mar 2011 hi folks, acting on (ill-informed?) local advice, i tried a few previously untested (for me) historical herp sites today - mainly in pursuit of adders. waste of piggin time tho. so it was back to the cemetery again; under a tin was this male slowie; you know, i used to be able to catch common lizards by hand when i was a boy. intact. after much practice. now i can barely even PHOTOGRAPH the buggers! heres a few puny pics; returning home, there were quite a few smooth and palmate newts at the surface in my pond; note algae growing on flag seeds ; cheers. lets see yours! ben Diversity. |

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 Hi Ben, Is that a blue spotted male i can see or is he just missing a few scales? I think i had one on Sunday also but the spots were not exactly blue. Maybe a spring slough will bring out the colour? I rarely if ever see this variety in my neck of the woods. There aren't many things better than finding old stumpy...what a beaut Cheers |

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 cheers guys. yes the slowie had some blueing Rob - it was in the pitting where the scales were missing. see a blue hereabouts from time to time. i thought this colouration was seen more commonly in older individuals? the one above was only half-grown tho - so maybe not! by the way, get buried here if you like but you might get DUG BACK UP again; badgers also live here ben Diversity. |
